Marching Band: Captain Lillian Low

Marching Band: Captain Lillian Low

Victoria Pursglove, Writer

Lillian Low is the captain for our marching band’s pit and front ensemble. She is currently a sophomore, which makes her the youngest captain of the entire band. As a part of the pit, she is in charge of the more complex of the instruments such as keyboards or even electric guitars. In exchange for playing a more difficult instrument, they do not have to march with the rest of the band and instead are placed at the front of the field. When asked about how she joined she told us: “I decided to join the marching band when one of my friends’ sisters encouraged me to do so. She has since graduated but she definitely made my first year of marching band much better.” Now two years later, she continues to strive and will do so until the end of her time at Audubon High School.

From the onlookers perspective, the pit may look like they have it easy. They don’t have to move after all, that must be one of the easiest positions in the band right? Those who participate in the pit would say the contrary. Lillian felt this way as well, especially since she started as a freshman. She said that: “I definitely struggled  to keep up musically with the upperclassmen. The learning curve is definitely a challenge for everyone in their first year, especially memorizing the music.” Even with that, she has since improved, citing that “The challenge was easy to overcome because the upperclassmen in the band never hesitate to help those with challenges.” Being able to overcome this difficult aspect of the band allowed Lillian to strive as captain.

For after high school, Lillian is unsure of what she would like to do at this point. She is only a sophomore, so she still has plenty of time to decide what her future career will be. She did, however, say that she would enjoy continuing with marching band whilst in college. Whatever she ends up deciding, her experience as a captain in our marching band will surely assist her in the future.
